The dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, the cathedral of Florence, rises above the city's rooftops in this view, its ribbed red-tiled curve finished by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1436. The cathedral's marble facade, banded in green, pink, and white, is much newer, completed in the 1880s in a neo-Gothic style. The National Photo Company, an American firm that produced travel views of Europe for tourists and schools, made this glass negative around 1916 to 1917, while Italy was fighting in the First World War. Its record is still thin, but the image shows how the city's landmarks were kept in circulation even during the war.
