The Rhine at Cologne, a city on the river's western bank, is the subject of this 8 by 6 inch glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection. The company was a Washington-based commercial firm that made travel views of foreign places for publishers, schools, and lantern-slide makers in the early twentieth century. The Library of Congress dates the negative to roughly 1916 to 1917 based on neighboring negatives, a period when Germany was at war and overseas views were harder to make and distribute. The title comes from unverified company data, and the negative shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating.
