Here Abraham Lincoln lies in state in Chicago, one of the stops on the slow rail journey that carried his body from Washington to Springfield, Illinois, in the spring of 1865. The photograph was made by S.M. Fassett, a Chicago photographer working during the city's mourning. Crowds filed past the open casket for hours, and the draped and decorated interior reflects the rituals of national grief that spread across the North after Lincoln's assassination in April. The image preserves a moment when the funeral procession turned into a public ceremony in cities far from Washington.
