This silkscreen poster is distinct for tying a folk festival to the New Salem years, the period in the 1830s when Abraham Lincoln lived in a frontier village on the Sangamon River in Illinois. Its title, "Out of the wilderness," points to that setting, when Lincoln moved from store clerk and surveyor to postmaster and young legislator before leaving for Springfield. The poster was produced by the Illinois Works Progress Administration Art Project in Chicago during the early 1940s, when federal arts programs promoted regional history and community events. Its bold color and flat graphic style reflect the silkscreen techniques the WPA used to make inexpensive public notices.
