Few places tie Lincoln's early life more closely than New Salem, the Illinois village where he spent roughly six years in the 1830s, clerking in a store, serving as postmaster, and studying law. This poster promotes a folk festival built around those years, and its title, *Out of the Wilderness*, points to the frontier settlement he knew before his political career. Produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, it reflects the 1930s interest in regional heritage and in public art that promoted local history. Silkscreen was a common method for WPA posters, which were printed in large runs and sent to communities for display.
