Lincoln the rail splitter" centers on the frontier labor that gave Abraham Lincoln his best-known nickname. During the 1860 Republican campaign, the "rail splitter" image presented him as a self-made man of the Midwest, and later paintings and prints kept that story alive long after his death in 1865. This color photomechanical reproduction, made around 1909 from an original by J.L.G. Ferris and copyrighted by F.A. Schneider, shows how the legend circulated in popular print.
