Unlike the many single portraits of Lincoln, this print shows the whole family together, in a scene the title places in 1861, the first year of his presidency. It is a mezzotint after a painting by Francis Bicknell Carpenter, who spent about six months living in the White House in 1864 to paint Lincoln and his household. The engraver, J.C. Buttre, reproduced the work as a print, copyrighted in 1873. Its appeal lies in its domestic view of the Lincolns, a side of the family that official portraits of the period rarely showed.
