Few photographs in this collection capture daily rural life as plainly as this one, which shows an ox cart on the road near the Manatí River in Puerto Rico. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that produced and sold views of American places and possessions in the early twentieth century, made thousands of such scenes, and this glass negative is dated to roughly 1910 to 1920, a period when the island had been under United States control for little more than a decade. Ox carts, known locally as carretas, were the traditional way to haul sugar cane, coffee, and other goods across the island's countryside, so the picture records a working tradition as much as a landscape.
