This view shows Central Guánica, the sugar mill and company town on Puerto Rico's southern coast, which the title records as "Porto Rico" in the period spelling. Sugar dominated the island's economy after the United States took control in 1898, and large centrals like this one, financed largely by American investors, drew workers and reshaped the surrounding landscape. The National Photo Company traveled widely to document such places for commercial sale and promotion in the early twentieth century. The picture survives as a copy of an 8 by 6 inch glass negative, and its surface streaks come from the natural decay of the original emulsion.
