A sugar refinery still under construction at Cartavia, Peru, is the subject of this view, a site on the country's northern coast where sugar estates were a major part of the export economy in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, an American firm that sent photographers across Latin America to document towns, industries and landscapes, produced the original image, and this copy negative on glass is catalogued with a date between 1910 and 1935. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes in the glass, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings.
