Construction of a sugar refinery at Cartavia, Peru, is the subject of this view, one of a series the National Photo Company made in the early twentieth century. Peru's north coast was home to large sugar estates that depended on mills like this one to turn cane into marketable product, and the works shown here would have been a significant investment for the estate that built it. The image survives as an 8 by 6 inch glass negative, and its date is an estimate based on negatives in the same range. Streaks and surface flaws from the deteriorating coating are visible, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
