Workers filling, weighing and sewing 25-pound sacks of sugar are the subject here, a step in food processing that depended heavily on hand labor in the early twentieth century. The picture survives as an 8 by 6 inch glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that documented commerce, government and city life. Its date falls between 1910 and 1920, when bulk packing of staples was becoming standard. Streaks and blemishes from the aging coating are visible on the plate, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947.
