Filter presses, the stacks of iron plates and cloths used to clarify cane juice, are the focus of this glass negative from a raw sugar mill in the Hawaiian Islands. Sugar was the dominant plantation industry in Hawaii during the 1910s, and mills like this one turned harvested cane into raw sugar, which was then shipped to refineries on the mainland. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that made views of American places for postcards and publication, produced the image, though it is dated only to the range between 1910 and 1920. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration in the original coating.
