The title places this view at Central Machete, one of the sugar mills, or *centrales*, that dominated Puerto Rico's economy in the early twentieth century. After the United States took the island in 1898, American capital and new railroads consolidated cane growing around large mills like this one, and the National Photo Company's 1910s views record that transformation for a public eager to see its new possessions. The record's title uses the period spelling "Porto Rico." The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the decay of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates from this era.
