Central Cambalache, a sugar mill on Puerto Rico, is the subject of this glass negative, and its title keeps the older spelling "Porto Rico" used in the early twentieth century. The island had been under American control since 1898, and by the 1920s large sugar centrales like this one tied the local economy closely to American capital. The National Photo Company recorded towns, landscapes and industry across the United States and its territories during this period. This copy negative, a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration in the original coating.
