Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is the subject of this 1910 view, preserved as an 8 by 6 inch glass negative. The town had been the site of the bloody Union and Confederate battle in July 1863, and by 1910, forty-seven years later, the surrounding ridges and farmland were being developed into a national memorial landscape that drew veterans and visitors. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that made views of American towns and landscapes for the printed trade, produced pictures like this one. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
