This glass negative shows Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a town whose name is fixed in American memory by the battle fought around it in July 1863. By 1910 the surrounding fields had been set aside as a national military park, drawing veterans, tourists and photographers, and the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that issued views of American places as postcards and prints, was one of many producers recording them. The title and date come from information on a related negative's sleeve and have not been independently confirmed, and the glass shows streaks and blemishes from age in its coatings.
