Camel Back Mountain rises behind this stretch of Arizona desert, shown before the land was irrigated for farming. The scene belongs to the Salt River Project, the irrigation effort in the Salt River Valley near Phoenix that drew on water stored behind Roosevelt Dam, completed in 1911. The National Photo Company made many views of the valley's transformation from scrubland to fields, and its promotional photographs were meant to show what new water could make possible. This copy was made from a glass negative dated between 1910 and 1935, and its surface shows streaks from the deterioration of the original coating.
