The Washington Base Ball Club of 1924 is the subject here, a team photographed during the years when baseball was the dominant sport of American towns and cities. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio known for its large output of news and portrait pictures in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and the record notes that the original title came from the company's own sleeve and has not been independently verified. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of press and commercial photographers of the era, and they were prized for their sharp detail. The plate's surface shows streaks and blemishes from the slow decay of its coating, a common sign of age that gives the image its worn, original character.
