The record gives only a generic title, "Street view," so this negative stands out less for a named landmark than for what it shows of Washington in the early twentieth century. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of work made by a commercial studio that photographed the capital and sold views of its streets, buildings and monuments to residents and visitors. The negative is dated roughly between 1910 and 1935, a period when the city was growing quickly and its avenues were filling with streetcars, automobiles and pedestrians. The record notes that the negative is on safety film and that it was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947, and it also flags possible streaking from deterioration of the coating.
