Few subjects in this collection carry as specific a location as Oraibi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in North America, perched on a mesa in northeastern Arizona. The title points to a kiva associated with the Snake ceremony, a Hopi religious society whose rites were closed to outsiders, so the scene reflects a place photographers of the period were eager to record. The National Photo Company made many such views of Southwestern pueblos in the early twentieth century, often for tourist and publishing markets. The title's question mark over the name "Moquin" signals that the identification is uncertain, a common issue with records of this kind.
