Unveilings of Grand Army of the Republic monuments drew out aging Union veterans in large numbers, and this National Photo Company glass negative records one such dedication, though its location is not given. The Grand Army of the Republic, founded in 1866, was the largest fraternal group of Civil War veterans, and its members often took part in memorial dedications in the 1910s and early 1920s. The plate also shows streaks and blemishes from the slow breakdown of its original coating, a common wear on glass negatives of this age.
