The title on this glass negative, *A.E.F. Monument*, points to the American Expeditionary Forces, the U.S. force that fought in World War I under General John J. Pershing, and to a memorial honoring its service. The record dates the image to 1924, but both the title and date come from notes made by the National Photo Company and have not been independently verified. The company was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that photographed buildings, monuments and public life in the early twentieth century, and this negative reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Look closely and you may see streaks and faint blemishes, the kind of deterioration that often affects aging glass plates.
