The title names the A.E.F. Monument, a memorial to the American Expeditionary Forces, the army the United States sent to Europe under John J. Pershing in World War I. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed the city and its landmarks in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative around 1924, and the title's notation of May 2, 1924, is consistent with that. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
