A boy known only as "Fess" appears in this April 1924 glass negative, caught mid-game of marbles, a pastime that was a fixture of American street and schoolyard life in the early twentieth century. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio whose large body of glass negatives documents Washington, D.C., and the nation's daily life in the period. The record's title is based on unverified information written on the negative sleeve, so the identity of the child is uncertain. Viewers should also notice the streaks and blemishes in the glass, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
