Dated April 26, 1924, and titled simply "Marbles," this glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that worked from the early 1900s into the 1930s. The company wrote the title on the negative or its sleeve, but that name has not been verified, so it may be a working label rather than a description of the scene. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of the period, valued for sharp detail that held up well in enlargement. Look closely for the streaks and blemishes caused by the natural breakdown of the original coatings, which show the plate's age as clearly as its subject.
