Few things in the National Photo Company's Washington work carry as much weight as a monument to a single fighting division. This glass negative, dated around 1925, records a memorial to the First Division of the American Expeditionary Forces, the Army unit that was among the first American combat formations to reach France in 1917. Memorials like this one were part of a wave of commemoration after World War I, as communities and veterans' groups sought permanent places to honor the dead. The negative's title comes from a note added by the company, and part of its original caption has been scratched away, so some details of the site remain uncertain. Faint streaks from the aging glass coating are also visible.
