A glass negative titled *Giving first aid* shows a scene of emergency care, though the title comes from data supplied by the National Photo Company and has not been independently verified. The company's Washington, D.C., studio produced a large body of work in the early twentieth century, when the American Red Cross and other groups were teaching first aid widely in schools, workplaces, and communities. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes that the original collection record attributes to deterioration of the glass plate's coating, which are part of the object's physical history.
