First Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, Virginia, anchors this view of a congregation that dates to the eighteenth century, in a river port just across the Potomac from the nation's capital. The National Photo Company, which documented American cities and landmarks in the early twentieth century for postcards and publications, made this glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1926. Glass plates like this one often show faint streaks and blemishes as their original coatings deteriorate. The title comes from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified, but the image still offers a useful record of the church and its streetscape during that period.
