The negative is dated April 23, 1924, and its title, "MacFadden," comes from a label the National Photo Company wrote on the glass or its sleeve. That name has not been independently confirmed, so it is best read as a working identification. The company, based in Washington, D.C., produced a large body of studio and news photographs from the early 1900s through the 1930s, documenting the capital's public life and its visitors. Herbert A. French gave this plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look closely at the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating and show how fragile these plates are.
