Labeled as the Salt River Project near the Sacaton Indian Reservation, this glass negative ties a rural Arizona scene to one of the state's major irrigation undertakings. The Salt River Project grew out of early twentieth-century federal reclamation work that brought dams and canals to the desert valleys around Phoenix, and communities at Sacaton, home to the Akimel O'odham and Pee-Posh, relied on river water for their fields. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented American towns and landscapes, made the negative sometime between 1918 and 1928. Its glass base shows streaks and blemishes from age, which is worth noticing when studying the image.
