Gilded altarpieces fill the sanctuary of the Iglesia de San Francisco Xavier in Tepotzotlán, shown here with the altar of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the north transcept. The church was built for a Jesuit college in the 1600s and 1700s, and its ornate interior is one of the best-known examples of colonial Baroque design in New Spain. The complex now houses the Museo Nacional del Virreinato, a museum of colonial art. The photographer is recorded only as Kahlo, and the card gives no date, so the picture's exact age is uncertain.
