The cathedral of San Francisco in Chihuahua City is the subject of this glass-plate negative, made by the W.H. Jackson & Co. studio, which the record dates to between 1880 and 1897 from the firm's 1898 catalog of views. Jackson's photographers traveled widely in Mexico during these years, when new railroad lines were opening the interior to American visitors and businesses, and they produced large views like this one for sale to travelers and collectors. The cathedral, which grew out of the colonial-era church of a northern mining and trading town, shows the stone massing and ornamented facade typical of Mexican ecclesiastical building of that period. The negative came to the collection as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
