This view focuses on the lower zone of the high altar in the church of San Francisco Xavier at Tepotzotlán, north of Mexico City, rather than the full gilded structure above. The church was built for the Jesuits, whose novitiate and college stood beside it, and its interior is known for elaborate Churrigueresque altarpieces covered in carved and gilded ornament. The card credits the photograph to Kahlo, but it records no date, so the picture's exact year is unknown. Close views like this one often show the carving and joinery that the full altarpiece hides from a distance.
