Carved wood and gilding fill the choir of the Iglesia de San Francisco in Quito, one of the most ornate spaces in the city's colonial churches. The church belongs to a Franciscan complex founded in 1535, among the oldest religious foundations in the Americas. Its interiors reflect the Quito School, whose workshops produced sculpture and gilded altarpieces that blended Spanish Baroque forms with local craftsmanship. The caption gives no date, so the photograph is most useful as a record of the church's architectural detail and altarpieces.
