Cholula, in the state of Puebla, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Mesoamerica, and the Franciscan convent and church of San Francisco stand among its many colonial-era religious buildings. Friars arrived in the region in the 1520s, soon after the Spanish conquest, and their churches were often built over or beside older sacred sites. The photoprint was made by Hugo Brehme, a German-born photographer working in Mexico City in the early 20th century, whose views of Mexican towns and monuments circulated widely as postcards. The record gives no date, so the exact year the picture was taken remains unknown.
