The caption places this view at the Convento de San Francisco in Lima, Peru, a Franciscan complex founded in the mid-1500s, not long after the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Its library grew into one of the city's most valued collections of colonial-era books, many printed in Europe and carried across the Atlantic. The card gives no date, so the moment this photograph captures is uncertain, but the image points to the convent's long role as a center of learning in the Andes.
