Rows of arches step back around an open courtyard in this 1868 view of the cloister of San Francisco in Lima, part of a Franciscan complex founded in the mid-1500s. The albumen print was made by Courret Hermanos, a photography studio working in Lima, and it appears in the album *Recuerdos del Perú*, a set of views of the country. Photographs like this one recorded colonial religious architecture at a time when such buildings drew wide interest from travelers and collectors, and the repeating arches show the convent's careful, orderly design.
