Pacing is the gait in which a horse moves both legs on one side together, and this print from Eadweard Muybridge's Palo Alto series shows it in a sequence of positions. The photographs were made at Leland Stanford's stock farm in 1878 and 1879, when Muybridge set a row of cameras along a track and triggered each shutter as the horse passed. The plate is number 59 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, published in 1881, and its subjects include a carriage as well as the horse. The series helped answer a question that had long been argued among horsemen and artists: what the hooves actually do in motion.
