Few sequences in Muybridge's work show gait as plainly as this pacing horse, in which the two legs on each side move together, a motion the eye rarely catches at speed. The print is one of the plates from *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book of photographs made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879 on Leland Stanford's horse farm. Muybridge lined up a row of cameras along a track and tripped each shutter as the horse passed, then arranged the frames to show consecutive positions. The carriage in the subject list points to the harness work these studies were built around, and the series helped answer long-running questions about how horses actually move.
