Rather than a galloping or trotting horse, this plate shows a pacer, an animal whose legs on the same side move forward together, a gait that looks very different from the diagonal stride of a trot. Eadweard Muybridge made the sequence at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, setting a row of cameras along a track and triggering them with threads stretched across the path. The subjects include a carriage, which places the motion in the working world of the period's roads. Published in 1881 as number 20 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, the plate shows how photography could break a moving body into steps the eye could not see.
