Among Muybridge's Palo Alto studies, this plate isolates the pacing gait, in which a horse moves both legs on one side together. Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, on the farm of Leland Stanford, and the plate appeared as number 22 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, published in 1881. The inclusion of a carriage in the subject reflects the driving and trotting culture that shaped the project. Muybridge's rows of cameras, triggered as the horse passed, turned split-second movements into a sequence that artists and scientists could study closely.
