Pacing, a gait in which a horse moves both legs on one side together, sets this plate apart from the trotting and galloping studies in the same series. Eadweard Muybridge made the photographs at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, on Leland Stanford's horse farm, where he was working on the question of whether a trotting horse ever has all four feet off the ground at once. The sequence was published in 1881 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, and the carriage in the subject list places the horse in harness, the kind of rig that driving and racing enthusiasts of the day cared about. Worth noticing is how the cameras, triggered in fractions of a second as the horse passed, froze poses the human eye could not follow.
