The title records that lava from the 1906 eruption of Vesuvius cut the Circumvesuviana line, partly destroyed Cook's railway, and left the mountain's funicular no longer in existence. The caption card names Arthur S. Riggs, though that attribution is unverified. The April 1906 eruption was one of the most destructive of its era near Naples, and this view shows how quickly the tourist railways on the mountain's slopes could be undone.
