The sitter is identified only as Aniwegi Boudinot, a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and that has not been independently verified. The Boudinot surname is best known through the Cherokee Nation, where family members served as editors and political leaders in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but the record does not confirm any such link. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., during the 1910s and 1920s, making studio and street portraits of many visitors, and this negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
