Mildred Harris was a silent-era film actress who married Charlie Chaplin in 1918, and this glass negative captures her as one of the faces of Hollywood's early star system. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio that made many portraits of public figures, produced the plate, though the record notes that its title comes from unverified data written on the negative sleeve. Dated to about 1920 from its batch, the image reflects the studio portrait style of that period. The plate also shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when viewing it.
