The equestrian statue of Ulysses S. Grant stands on a broad plaza at the foot of Capitol Hill, with its bronze horses and general set on a tall granite base. Sculptor Henry Merwin Shrady spent years on the monument, which was dedicated in 1922 after a long period of planning and funding. This National Photo Company negative dates from around the time the memorial was nearing completion, when Washington was adding major works of public art. Look for the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
