The title names Geo. W. Hess and his mother-in-law with a plant, though the caption comes from unverified notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative sleeves. The company, based in Washington, D.C., produced commercial photographs of the city and its surroundings in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives later reached the Library of Congress, including through a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Viewers should expect streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the original coatings deteriorating over time.
