The subject is recorded as "Geo. E. Chambular[?]," a name the catalogers marked with a question mark, so the spelling of the sitter's name is uncertain. The negative is dated June 16, 1921, though that date also comes from unverified notes written on the original negative or its sleeve. It is a glass plate from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., that produced portraits and street scenes in the early twentieth century. The Library of Congress received the collection as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Glass plates of this age often show streaks and blemishes where the light-sensitive coating has broken down, and this one carries those marks.
