Madam Selva is the name the National Photo Company gave this glass negative, a detail that sets it apart from the company's many other plates. The date, June 18, 1921, comes from notes the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and it has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates document the city's people and streets during that period. The streaks and blemishes visible on this plate are typical of natural deterioration in the original emulsion coatings. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
